Driving Sustainability Through Innovation: Our Partnership with The Royal Mint

At Sky Medical Technology, innovation has always been central to our mission — not only in how we improve patient outcomes through our medical devices, but also in how we approach environmental responsibility.

I am pleased to announce a significant step forward in our sustainability journey: a new partnership with The Royal Mint to recycle end-of-life electronic components from our geko® and firefly® device production lines. This collaboration represents a tangible commitment to supporting the UK’s circular economy and aligns with our broader ambition to achieve net zero by 2045.

As part of this initiative, we are supplying redundant printed circuit boards (PCBs) — which contain small but valuable quantities of gold, silver, copper and other metals — to The Royal Mint’s state-of-the-art facility in South Wales. There, using a patented ambient-temperature chemistry developed by Excir, The Royal Mint safely extracts gold from the PCBs. This reclaimed gold is then used in the creation of its exclusive 886 jewellery range.

This is a practical and forward-thinking solution to the challenge of end-of-life product management. It ensures that valuable materials are not wasted, but instead reintroduced into the economy in a high-value form. It is also a story of local collaboration and innovation: our devices are assembled at Gwalia Healthcare in Wales, and the recovered materials are processed and repurposed within the same region — a true Welsh success story.

At Sky, we are proud to work alongside visionary partners like The Royal Mint to demonstrate what is possible when sustainability is embedded in every aspect of operations. This partnership is not only a milestone for our company, but a powerful example of how UK-based organisations can lead the way in responsible innovation and resource recovery.
